I'm a wildlife sketch artist
and I support the WWF.
I am a self-taught wildlife sketch artist living in Hermanus, Cape Town and have a huge passion for all wildlife big or small.
My inspiration being Wildlife artist David Shepherd Wild Life Foundation, and Artist Richard Symonds, both well known for their huge contribution towards wild life conservation. Any profits made on my sketches, 5% will go to WWF 'World Wide Fund for Nature'.

The eye is small in comparison with the head and there is only a vestigial tear gland. Elephants do not have a tear duct and ‘tears’ simply evaporate or run down the cheek. Sight improves when in jungle areas or shade. The poor eyesight is more than compensated by excellent hearing, sense of smell and tactile sense.

Elephant eyes are about 3.8 cm (1.5 in.) in diameter and their vision is moderate. Elephants traverse forests, savannas, and grasslands, primarily orienting with the trunk, as opposed to sight. Ex: There have been documented occurrences of elephant herds being led by a blind member. The complete lack of vision did not hinder the blind member’s ability to fulfill its leadership role. These gentle giants never cease to amaze me, did you know that heir hearing ability is amongst the best of all land creatures.

I am entering this sketch into the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Awards, Tondo 2015 competition. The theme being 'CONNECTIONS'. This unique exhibition of tondi (circular artwork) which will be displayed on the end of barrels in a gothic, working wine cellar is the culmination of this competition. My choice of 3 elephants shows the connection these beautiful gentle giants have with each other, fitting I feel for the theme 'CONNECTIONS' I only found out about this competition 2 weeks ago. so it's been a challenge but enjoyable and great fun.

This drawing was a commission, I have never attempted to draw a great white before so quite pleased with the turn out.
The great white reaches maturity around 15 years of age, and was previously believed to live to over 30 years of age, the life span of the great white is far longer, now estimated to be as long as 70 years of more, making it one of the longest lived cartilaginous fish currently known. Male's take 26 years to reach sexual maturity, while females take a whopping 33 years to be ready to produce offspring.

The Bengal is revered for its beautiful coat and outgoing personality, but these cats aren't for casual pet owners. Bengals are smart and cunning animals that crave attention and are always exploring. A Bengal is a handful, but you can rest assured that life with one will never be boring.

Lions spend much of their time resting and are inactive for about 20 hours per day. Although lions can be active at anytime, their activity generally peaks after dusk. Intermittent bursts of activity follow through the night hours until dawn, when hunting most often takes place.

I did this A3 sketch from one of Marino Cano's photo's. Marino is a wildlife photographer if you go to her website you will see some of her beautiful work.There is such vulnerability and innocence in our young wildlife.

Elephants are under tremendous threat due to the poaching of ivory. I am sad to say, that if nothing is done to stop this on going slaughter then we will no longer see these gentle giants roaming free on our African plains ever again. Ele's are one of my favourite animals to draw, so much detail which is challenging and very rewarding.

This is a drawing of a Bull Elephant walking the plains of Africa. Male African Elephants can reach 4m (13 ft) and weigh 7000 kg's (15 000 pounds), and can live up to 70 years of age. They flap their large ears to control their body temperature. Adult bulls usually interact with family groups when looking for a mate. One of the biggest threats to the elephant populations is the ivory trade as the animals are poached for the ivory tusks.

I so enjoyed drawing this Tiger. The Tiger is listed as 'endangered'. The largest of all cats was once known throughout central, eastern and southern Asia, but currently survives only in scattered populations. India has still the largest national population. The key to this species' survival is the immediate and sever protection of the remaining populations.

This is a pencil drawing I did of a wolf. They are wonderful pack animals. Did you know when wolves howl together, no two wolves howl on the same note. Instead, they purposely harmonize with each other to create the illusion that there are more of them than there actually are. It is the sole ancestor of the dog. The sad part it is misunderstood by man...it has a long association with humans, having been despised by humans due to it's hunting in pastoral communities due to it's attacks on livestock.

These cats have the most beautiful eyes, I love to draw them. The tiger is the largest of the cat species, reaching a total body length of up to 3.38 m (11.1 ft) and weighing up to 388.7 kg (857 lb) that's in the wild. Major reasons for population decline include habitat destruction and poaching. The Tiger's closest living relatives are the Lion, Leopard and Jaguar.

This is a sketch of a Bald Eagle. A mature Bald Eagle is recognised by it white head. Juvenile bald eagles are a mixture of brown and white, and will not develop mature plumage, including the white head feathers, until they reach maturity between 4 and 5 years of age. With a wing span of up to 7.5 feet and weighing between 8 and 14 pounds. The Bald Eagle is Alaska's largest resident bird of prey.

This is a very small sketch of a lion cub. After a gestation period of 100 - 120 days, 2 to 5 cubs are born in a den. When born they are blind, helpless and weigh less then 2.3 Kgs (5 lbs). They have spots on their coat which disappear as they get older. Within 3 weeks they have their eyes open and they can walk around, and by the time they reach 1 month old they have their first set of teeth, they are weaned when they reach 6 - 7 months old but stay in the vicinity of their mother for the first 2 years.

This is a drawing I did of my dog 'Chase'. When you are the owner of a Siberian Husky you have to be a dedicated dog lover as they are not easy pets to own, they not like the normal house dog. Huskies are very active, and energetic, and resilient breed whose ancestors came from the extremely cold and harsh environment of the Siberian Arctic. They cannot be kept in flats or small gardens and they very good escape artists. Grooming is hard work and essential.

This is another drawing I did of my Yorkshire Terrier called 'Bison'. The breed is nicknamed 'Yorkie' and they are lovely pets to own. They have a mind of their own being terriers, and even though their maximum size is 7 pounds they feel they deserve to be in the heavy weight bracket of the Rottweiler.

A little about myself I grew up in Rhodesia now Zimbabwe. I then moved with my family back to South Africa. I started to draw as a young girl but never pursued it. When I was 10 I drew a pencil sketch of my brother and my Uncle entered it into a art competition in Durban, but it was disqualified because I had used finger shading, but ironically today you can use just about anything for pencil shading.
I started again 8 years ago with wildlife pencil sketches, as they say practice makes perfect, the more you do the more techniques you learn, and trust me there is still so much I need to learn when it comes to sketching and making it look real on that paper. When I first start to draw it's a bit daunting with a blank piece of paper staring you in the face, but once I start it all soon comes together. Sketching is so rewarding and when I finish a drawing and it has turned out the way it should, you get so much satisfaction, it's almost as though you bringing that animal to life on paper.
